I have a regular variety of autumnalis and I love it!
I was told to give it a winter rest and also to withhold fertilizer until the new growths appear...both pieces of advise that I have ignored (not so much by choice, but by location of the plant) and mine has bloomed for the past 2 years without fail! So a little water during the drought won't kill it.
I was told by Jim Clarkson that they are hard to grown and bloom, to which I quickly said "Shhhhhh, don't let her know!" Everytime someone tells me that a certain species is hard to grow...the plants seem to listen and even though they bloom for my like clockwork as soon as someone mentions this little factoid, they immediately start showing their difficult side!

Thanks for all your support. I'm excited about it because I'm branching out and challenging myself.

I checked my orchid inventory spreadsheet and I already have 9 Laelia anceps, and, after the initial learning curve (very small) they are all happy and growing, and I managed to get one to bloom (the others are seedlings and divisions, so I have to wait for blooming)

So, that's why I decided to go with the autumnalis. I've bought from SBOE before, and even though it's a little pricey, I think it's absolutely gorgeous and their plants are top notch. I've not had one arrive in bad condition yet.

Oh, and they already did virus testing and it came back negative--I was informed this morning that it's a division of 3 active psuedobulbs and a couple of back bulbs, and that it was put in the quarantine cage for shipment on June 14th.

I appreciate all your encouragement!! :)

No. You are not insane. Considering what it is I do not think it is bad price either.

You’re not insane. If you can afford it, buy it! Of course you’ll have plenty of time to consider it, SBOE usually requires a one month quarantine period for Florida shipments.

No more insane than the rest of us. I've bought several mini-catts priced a little north of $100 recently. The way I look at it, I would need to buy a large number of seedlings to get the ONE I really want, and even then, I might not get it! It's my contention that divisions of truly superior high quality orchids are a tremendous bargain considering how infrequently they occur. For my money, I will almost always buy a division rather than a seedling. If I want to raise up a bunch of seedlings, I'd rather have them be my own hybrid...

Hi guys! I'm so excited! I just spoke with SBOE and they will be shipping this gorgeousness on the 25th of June. :)

Because I'm an orchid slut, I reserved this for next month:
