Default Judging and naming questions?

Could someone who does AOS judging or actively shows plants help me understand how this works please? I have been to both the AOS website and to the British site but I just do not understand how this works.
Probably a bunch of dumb questions but here goes...

If I wanted to show a plant that was given to me by someone else a while ago (more then 2 years) how can I do this? It is the naming part as well as which plants can be judged that confuses me. If it has no cultivator name does it need one before it can win anything? Also does this mean I can name it myself? I have permission from the previous plant owner but that's all. And if other plants exist from the same breeding that are already shown and named, does this mean I can't have mine judged and named?
As you can see I am very lost.

Now as far as seedlings that I may have crossed myself and grew, do I have to register them before I can have them judged also? If the cross was already made does that disqualify them from judging/naming?

I know this is many questions and I as said, I have read many different articles and I've even been to the registering sites, but I guess it still all looks like Greek to me. I just don't want to put the cart before the horse so to speak.

You can give it a clonal name that is whatever is your choice. I believe you can name it after you recieve the award.

You do not have to register crosses before judging either I believe, but they will need to be registered after. If the cross already is registered it can still be judged and awarded

Thank you so much Fern for your reply. I was getting so frustrated with all the websites because it just was not sinking in for me.
So as long as I have had it and grew it myself for longer then a year and it is a super plant it can be shown? It does not matter that I did not grow it from seeds, or that I do not own the rest of the offspring?
Also, if I make a cross, that was already crossed..say in 1919 and registered then. When its given a name, does it take the clonal from 1919? Maybe I am making this much harder then it really is.

Yes, as long as you have been growing that plant it can be shown and judged

I think you have hybrid name and clonal names mixed up.

If you remake a cross from 1919, it takes the name hybrid name. For example all Paph Honey will be Paph philippinense crossed with Paph primulinum. These hybrid name will have to be registered by the Royal Horticultual Society eventually.

But you can give any clonal name you want, and these don't need any formal registration. These are the names you have inside the ' '. For example Paph Honey 'Djarum Black'
