What have I done...I purchased a Masdevallia!
Have never been able to grow these things at all but took the plunge once again and got a Golden Monarch. Huge yellow flower on this thing.....its absolutely gorgeous. Will see if I can get a half decent picture in a bit.

Humidity would probably be your challenge in Edmonton...and heat in the summer. I only have one Massie and it does well for me in an east window and 50-55% humidity. Winter temps down to 15 C and summers below 25 C.

I am a newbie too...
to keep my masd happy I enclosed them in a 10 gallon aquarium to keep the humidity high, and I use ice packs to keep it cool.
The entire bottom is just some wet cheap wisconsin sphag that covers all the pots. The sphag is kept cool with the ice packs and the sphag helps with the humidty. And it looks nice...
I will have to move mine into the cool storage room in the basement probably

I was also told to water often. Someone waters everyday in sphag which suprised me. That sort of like phragmipedium watering!

YOu still need to keep it coolish, just not in the 50's like to cold growers. I would keep it between 70 and 75 degrees F as much as I could. Good luck!
