At first I was confused, but then I realizes it's because Troy's simultaneously processing all of Matty (PsyGuy)'s orders at once. Enjoy the forty-five green smilies all at once, my friend!!!!

TROY SHIPS ALL 45 TOMORROW. TROY TAKES NO PRISONERS.

How long will he normally keep flasks for so you can send in one watch? It is not worth sending less than 5 at a time for me with most species and a $150 USD phyto....

I've been drooling over the flask list for a while now too, but choke every time I see the cost of the phyto. Does anyone know if a phyto is necessary for importing flasks from the US into Canada? Do I need a permit as well?

I know the feeling regarding the cost. What Beeps me off is that in Thailand, Phyto is optional. That is, it is only ever used when the official decided to get off his/her fat behind and actually do the job - trust me, I have spent 3 hours in a Thai customs office and the description is true.. Pathetically lazy people who rarely move off the chair; a 1.5 hour coffee break is a great perk.

I recently got some flasks from Troy, and paid the phyto fee for and the flasks came, no fault on his side and I get his need to issue a phyto. However, it annoys me like hell to part with $150 and to still see the phyto cert attached to the box when it arrives - package inspected with the lovely customs tape to say so, phyto neatly wrapped in a sealed plastic enveloped that has never been broken. I can post the pic.

I got a Thai buddy to call customs and they said, "yeah, you need it, but we only check for it when we feel like it". I cant believe the buffoon actually said as much in Thai.

Sorry for the rant. I am just peeved off. So for me, getting as many flasks in a batch as possible is necessary to make it worth the expense of the fee for Troy's state.

You may not be aware that the fee varies from US state to state. North Carolina only charges US $50. Its all about revenue LOL...

According to an 2004 article on the COC website (Importing Orchids into Canada), you do need a Phyto and import permit for all flasks imported even from US. You do not need any paper for less than 50 plants (out of flask) except if plants come from Oregon or California (specific rules apply)
But from a more recent document (still from COC), you only need the Phyto for flasks : http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/.../importe.shtml

Seems like it would be far cheaper to buy seeds from the OSB and try the flasking myself....even if it took a number of tries to get it right.

Given the sterile nature of flasks, I'm surprised the rules are more restrictive for flasks than they are actual plants. Sounds like it's more a form of taxation then an actual safety concern.

(Sorry for hijacking....I know this discussion probably wasn't the intention of the OP)

I found a tool on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency about import requirements : just answer a few questions and you get the current texts and rules : Canadian Food Inspection Agency - AUTOMATED IMPORT REFERENCE SYSTEM / Agence canadienne d'inspection des aliments - SYSTÈME AUTOMATISÉ DE RÉFÉRENCE À L'IMPORTATION
