Default What is in a name?

I'm hoping you all can help me clear up something that has puzzled me and I've been afraid to ask, as it may seem quite stupid. And I'm not even sure how to ask this. But then perhaps there are others who can't figure this out, so I will try to muddle through this.
Example: Richard Mueller orchids. First, how did an orchid get an actual person's name? What happens....does this person create his own type orchid? Hausermann's also has orchids named after them. ?????
I have three plants that have Richard Mueller as part of their cross, and I don't know the significance.
I may get the "most unusual question" trophy. (you can subsitute unusual for dumbest)

That is a great question and you were close to the answer; what happens is the first person to raise a new cross to flower can register a name for it. They just contact the Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: Registration of Orchids and fill out a form and pay a small fee then it is reviewed and the put in there database under that name
