schultz orchid potting mix

i bought a bag of schultz orchid potting mix. the outside of the bag had a picture of a good looking potting mix. i got home and opened tha bag and the mix was like a really fine dust with a few pieces of bark, charcoal, and the "special" ceramic nuggets. is this how the mix always is? here is a pic of what the mix looks like.

I have purchased Schultz's Orchid mix and don't recall it looking like yours. If you haven't used it, maybe return it?????? I have also used the Better Gro product line (Special Orchid Mix or Phalaenopsos Mix) and Fafard Orchid Mix. I prefer the Fafard product because it has bark and CHC as part of the mix. Some people don't like the CHC. Fafard is hard to find and a bit pricey. The Better Gro line is also very good and very available at the blue Big Box Store.

I've never used Schultz but have used Better-Gro mixes as they are endorsed by AOS. Plus the have several mixes some just bark and other with the charcoal & perlite mixed in. The mix you have looks like it would be good as a terrestrial mix. Experiment and let us know how it works on a few of your more established orchids.

That stuff looks crushed! This mix should be very chunky not like gritty soil. I would take it back and explain to them, it's just not usable. Don't spend your hard earned money on that cr@p!

I agree! I have used it in the past and it definately didn't look like that. It was actually a pretty chucky mix. I say return it too.

it looks like the end of a batch or sumthing. yeah, I have the same mix, and it has much bigger chunks than that!

i don't have time to go back to the store today and i just got some bare root orchids so i just used a collander and rinsed the fine stuff out. now it looks ok for orchid use.

Hi there

Orchids represent the largest genus of plants in the world.
It should therefore not be a surprise to learn that different species need different potting mixes. Siome do best in no mix at all.
Which ones are you trying to (re)pot?

I love Schultz mix, personally! After a few waterings, all of the fine particles wash away and leave you with a perfectly draining substrate. My cattleyas and zygopetalum love it especially, when used in a clay pot. Yours seems to look about right.
