That's one of the reasons Diazinon was removed (as were the others) - it was (is) being used for uses it wasn't registered for. It's about the last effected control of ants including fire ants. For mosquitoes, Malathion was a better product (more effective). Spectricide used to contain Diazinon, but isn't available either anymore. This was best control of root maggot in raddish, most root crops, potatoes, etc. As long as users continue to sling this stuff all over the back yards of the US, then many more products will disappear as well. Sorry, now I am off the soap box.

I got it from a good source last year...malithion will be off the market within the next year or so.

I can't tell you folks enough to be careful when using poisons. We have just had someone pick up a severe case
of poisoning because he loved to stroll through his GH barefoot!

I've had several friends die from handling herbicides and insecticides, so I know what you are talking about. I am a product of the VietNam war, after all. OK, now off my soap box

So are the mosquitos sucking the leaves and subsequently getting infected? Or just that they are pesty and make it difficult to enjoy your chids? There must be something to address them? While not the solutiion, using something like RD-20 or Physan will help with secondary infection

As a caution, I was getting ready to use a pump up garden sprayer and while pumping, the seal let loose and the product blew passed my face. I was wearing safety glasses and gloves so no harm done but I bought a new sprayer with a diff seal design. I always use gloves and safety glasses.

Thank you for the great post about Physan. I too am about to receive my first ever order of it, so I am glad to see the warnings. Generally, I don't take them too seriously. I think I inherited that trait from my mother who refuses to wear sunblock, wear gloves, etc. I will definitely be sure to be more careful with this product now.

On another note, I had no idea Malithion was effective at controlling mosquitos! How do you use it? I have a nice sized bottle, but generally just pull it out for spider mites or something similar. I better stock up too befroe it goes off the market.

The accepted method is to fog with ithe solution. I haven't seen foggers around for a while, but they are electric devices that heat up the spray that you mix and turn it into a white fog that hangs in the air for like an hour or so. You fog around bushes, etc as well as over the lawn to kill the adults. In Oregon, the community I lived in (Klamath Falls) used to run through the subdivisions every evening fogging from a jeep. We had to close all the windows to keep the stuff out of the house. Mosquitos were a real problem there because the subdivision was built in reclaimed (drained) swamp (Marsh) and lots of standing water.
