If you switch to moss, I would suggest using clear pots and then you can keep an eye on your roots. Only a suggestion. Oh, and spag. moss needs changing every year as it breaks down quicker.
So don't forget pictures of your new purchases!!!!! :)

I grow nearly all my orchids in Sphagnum moss and have not had any real problems with using both the living and dead moss. The main thing is not to pack it too tight and every so often 'fluff' up the sphagnum around the plants to aeriate the growing medium, being careful not to break any roots. A careful watering schedule is also a very important factor and good water quality a definite requirement for healthy growth. I really prefer my natural spring water or even rainwater and give the pot a good flushing every two weeks before fertilizing.

I live in a tropical country, but I still don't like moss. Last time I bought a baby phal, that lady put it in a very tight moss, and it rot almost all the roots. I didn't know about and I found out everything when I re-potted that baby.

I agree it's about controlling the water, but I'm just a newbie, what can u expect  Well, if you're good in watering then go with moss. I think coconut husk and charcoal are the best for me, as I dont want to rot the roots.

:goodluck:
