What about cedar mulch? More prevalent in my area and I think similar characteristics. Anyone tried it?

I was about to say the likelihood of finding cypress mulch outside of a specialty use, like smaller bags for reptile bedding, if the trees don’t grow in your area is low. It’s not cost effective to ship across the country to sell for $5-9/bag and the typical consumer isn’t willing to pay more than that. Maybe you could find it if a local bulk buyer imports it for some reason, but I’ve never seen cypress mulch available at big box stores in San Diego. We have many types of fir and cedar mulch because those trees grow all over the west. I wonder if shredded cedar would be a suitable substitute.

I’m sure there are other similar bulk suppliers, but anybody within driving distance of Escondido should check out San Pasquale Valley Soils website. They offer bark mulch, shredded mulch, and other additives. Right across the street from the SD Zoo Safari Park. They run monthly free product giveaways on the second Saturday of the month. Sometimes they give away the nicer shredded mulches.

I have not been doing this long enough to be able to give advice, but there is an article on growing in cypress mulch on St. Augustine Orchid Society's website.

The method is kind of counterintuitive: you pack the mulch very hard around the roots, which is supposed to stimulate their growth. If you start with very wet mulch, which I do, you shouldn't need to water again for almost a month (depending on the usual factors, of course) I use 1/3 pumice to 2/3 mulch.

I live in Virginia, and 100% cypress mulch is very selectively available here. Unfortunately, it's a long drive for me. In the meantime, I'm trying both the blend and the pet bedding.

No idea if cedar mulch would work. Has anyone tried it?
