MGP! Thanks for the heads up! I knew Prime neutralized nitrates and other "pollutants" in the water but I didn't realize that made them not available to plants... Actually makes me wonder if I should be more judicious using it in my planted aquarium.

Roberta, "solution looking for a problem" is a good summary of the consensus!

I've never used prime but I have used sodiumthiosulfate based water conditioners for years on my orchids with no issues. Seachem wont disclose what is in Prime.

Now I just use a countertop 10 stage water filter that I plumbed into my faucet to remove chlorine/chloramines.

Chloramines have been used in my municipal water supply for a decade or more. I use fresh tap water on my collection, mostly Cats, and have never had a problem growing things well.

I have a 75 gallon fish tank, and at one time or other I end up using the water to water both orchids and other plants. This fish tank water is from the tap, and some kind of dechlorinator is always used. I've used prime in the past. These days I went to the simpler (easier to find) Tetra Aqua Safe Plus. It has never caused any problems. When I drain the tank (in the warmer weather) I just send it by hose into the garden. In the winter it is too cold so I send it by hose to the bath tub. I have a pump system, which semi-automates fish tank water changes. I've had the same fish in the tank, for over 6 (some up to 8 years) years so they seem to be happy with it.
