Default Oncidium Eye Candy 'Pinky'

Hello everyone,

My first time posting here! I am an avid Orchid grower. I've had good success with most of my orchids. I have an Oncidium Eye Candy 'Pinky'. I've had this plant for 4 years. This is the only orchid that has not rebloomed. It has quadrupled in size, repotted twice, 10 pseudobulbs. It has recently started to have tons of new growth. I've been debating separating the plant then it began shooting up tons of new growth. Should I separate the plant with all the new growth it is producing? Do I need to separate the plant for it to finally rebloom? I believe I could easily have 3 plants from this one plant.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Angie

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Your plant sounds easily big enough to flower. When big Oncidiums don't flower the usual causes are one or more of: Not enough light, irregular watering or not fertilizing at all.

Leaves should be pale green in good light, not dark green in less light. If you have any transverse pleats in the leaves that indicates not enough water. They need some fertilizer, but not much.

The time to divide is when new growth is forming and new roots are just beginning to show. If you wait too long the longer new roots will be damaged in the repot, and the plant will be set back. So if your plant is starting new roots you could divide it.

However, if you have the space, larger plants give better displays. 10 pseudobulbs is not terribly large for an Oncidium. If it hasn't been repotted in 2 years or more I would repot as soon as it makes new roots. If it's been repotted within 2 years I would leave it in that pot and try changing other things to get it to flower.

What kind of light is it getting? What are your day/night temperatures? How is it potted? How are you watering and fertilizing?

One or more photos of the whole plant would help. Sometimes people need to make 5 posts before posting photos. If that's your situation each response to somebody else's post counts.

Edit: I looked it up on Orchid Roots (bluenanta.com.) The current name is Oncostele Eye Candy. It sure is pretty! Its grandparent Oncidium Barossa Valley is composed of cool growing species. If your temperatures are fairly warm, you might try keeping this one cooler.

Thank you for your suggestions. Here are my answers to your questions.
* Repotted it last spring. Potted in orchid mix but I added moss because this orchid seems to need more water then my other ones.
* Just purchased full spectrum grow lights. My other orchids are producing new growth just within a week of having the lights. I live OH so we have several dark months.
* I fertilize monthly
* I think my Pinkie needs more light based on your suggestions. The leaves are a darker green.
* Part of the plant is growing out sideways. I'm going to try and attach pics so hopefully you can see.
* I lower my temp around 4° at night.
* A few leaves have pleats but I think that happened forming a recent move to a new home.

The increased light should help. How do you fertilize? Formula, dilutuon?

Now I just use Miracle Gro for Orchids. I dilute it to a lower strength when I water. I lost my other fertilizer during my recent move.

What are your thoughts about dividing the plant? The pbulbs that are growing sideways are a bit of a hassle because the leaves get caught on other plants knocking things over. That is an area where there is new growth.

My ultimate goal is to get it to bloom.

What is the number formula on your fertilizer? How do you dilute it?

If you want to see flowers don't divide it yet.

It calls for 1/4 tsp per gallon bi weekly during active growing. I've only been feeding monthly at the same rate. Maybe I need to feed more often?

I'd use 1/8 tsp per gallon every 2-3 waterings during active growth.

Default summers outdoors under a tree with lots of water

hi, i hope youve been able to get your "pinkie" to bloom by now. i hung mine from a plum tree for the summer with auto watering twice a day. added a good time release fertilizer, it has not only formed three flower spikes and a new growth, plus, its in full bloom now too. best of luck
