so i have this covered from all angles as i am a city boy who was partly raised in the country and is a rebel and was also a state attorney....

that cop is a HUGE jerk hole. you did the totally correct thing and what he SHOULD have done was think, this guy just saved me hours of knock and ask where i might have been shot AND a call for animal control and then shook your hand, removed his hat and asked you what you shoot and if you hunt...etc.etc

the discretion of law enforcement is the reason it is the hardest and most important job in society and a HUGE trainwreck.

I try to always tell the truth to the authorities when i can.....(note if there are not enough qualifiers in that sentence then sprinkle a few more for good measure)

i found out that finding the better way AROUND the law is always better- for example. I have one neighbor who is human anus. they try to get everyone in the neighborhood in trouble as much as possible while their house is the dumps....anyhoo...i called the local police last week and said who i was and where i lived and that my intentions were to shoot lizards on my property safely and i was interested in avoiding any calls from my neighbors...i had informed everyone and one neighbor was not able to give me their consent and so i was telling them in case they got a call...here is my cell and my life time hunting and fishing lic number …..

i know i will get a call but i also know the police will not be coming out LOL

to me...responsible use of lethal projectiles is the SAFEST pest control if it is effective. Clearly a gun cannot beat ants. but chemicals and other non-resident animals and traps are all potentially just as bad...

LOL I thought I was just telling a funny story about a time I tried to tell the truth and do the right thing, and it came back and bit me in the butt. I didn't mean to start a whole debate about firearms lol.

And as far as my choice of guns, i think my 22 is at my dad's house, and all I had in my house was that 10g shotgun. And I fired it from the open kitchen window downward toward the skunk which was in the middle of the yard. Any stray buckshot would have gone straight into the ground if it didn't go into the skunk. I'm not a crazy gun person, I think there should be reasonable limits on our right to carry firearms, for the good of public safety. And I'm not a great shot, but the skunk was close enough that with a shotgun, anybody is virtually destined for success.

Our first amendment guarantees us the right to free speech, but we accept that there are certain limits to that. You can stand on a corner and say that you hate African Americans. That's within your right of free speech, You cannot however stand on that corner and tell everybody who has a gun to go get their gun and start shooting every black person they see.

That would be illegal because it incites violence and is a reasonable limit to your right to free speech. If we can accept reasonable limits to one amendment, we can certainly accept reasonable limits to another in order to secure a safe, civilized, and orderly society.

Anyway, sorry I started a thing lol. I thought I was just telling a funny story hahahahaha

Yeah, I'm impressed with us. We have kept this quite civil. I feel a little bad about the snarky comment I made to ES. If I had to do it over, I wouldn't have said it that way, but if that's the worst of it, we're doing pretty good.

We have a neighbor we can call if we sight a coyote. We live in a small town, in a subdivision of homes that are close together but the police are fine with it so.... He is an experienced hunter so the risk of someone or something getting hurt by him is much lower than someone or something being hurt by a coyote. I think that getting permission from the police is a good call.

Speaking of lax gun laws, DC is in Florida.
Oh, wait.........what gun laws?

Shooting iguanas in FL is supported 100% by every law enforcement agency and Fish & Wildlife. They are invasive and highly destructive. All they ask is that you be considerate of neighbors and be a good shot and don't let them suffer. Pellet and BB guns only so it's reasonably safe in neighborhoods.

I actually bought some of the large mouse/rat sticky traps. I'm going to take those when I go back down and put them on my benches.

You could apologize. He is a great guy, the kind of friend who'd always look out for your best interests. In fact, he has been a great advisor to many people.

Do you ever watch Alone? Amós hit a fox with a "Bunny Buster" arrow. It didn't hurt him but it sure got his attention. Maybe your curlies need a reminder.

I have heard that sometimes you get a cold snap in Florida, and by that I mean like in the low 50s, and I've heard that this is far too cold for the iguanas, and they go into a sort of hibernation and fall out of trees onto the ground and stuff. Is that true? Does that actually happen? You could easily just collect them and euthanize them if that happens.

Funny you mention the cold... it’s why the iguanas are so bad. We used to get a period of 40s weather for a week or more that would kill a LOT of them. That has not happened in a while AND further north they are learning to go in the water for the coldest times to get the thermal residuals until sunup....like I said....click, pew....click, pew

I thought this thread would be about pests prevention and control but it turned out to be the most American thing I've seen in a while

From a European standpoint, what's freaking me out is seeing images of people roaming free with stuff that can blast another person's head clean off from the other end of the street.
Aren't you scared that someone around might get dangerous?
Incivility and violence are getting out of control here, I can't imagine how things would go with firearms...
