vanilla planifolia question
Default vanilla planifolia question

About 8 months ago I purchased two vanilla planifolia cuttings from ebay, India seller. Instead of sending a cutting with leaves, like I was expecting, they sent me two primary stems of the plant. There was one node on each plant. It came with instruction to plant them in soil and said that the plant would grow from there. I did that with one of them and with the other I put it in a glass of water.

Both of them grew a single root from their node, but have done absolutely nothing else. They both appear to be alive all these months. But no leaves are growing at all and no stem growth either. Its like a living green stick with a long root. I'm beginning to believe I got ripped off. Is there anyway I can get the plant to grow leaves and begin growing like normal? Or can it not take off without at least one leaf first?

How much light are you giving it? This is an orchid that likes full sun in the tropics, and sitting them on a sunny windowsill isn't sufficient light. And why on Earth would you order such a commonly and legally available plant from a foreign seller? I'm guessing the price was low, which pretty much guarantees that the seller didn't supply the required phytosanitary certification to make the plants legal for importation into the US.

Both plants have been about 10" under a shop light containing four white LED grow lights (each 18W at 5000K) (each equivalent to 32 W fluorescent bulbs) from superbrightleds.com (link below). Also, the shop light is directly in front of a big sunny window so they are getting a bit more light on top of that (timer on 12 hours per day). So I'm not sure if light is the issue, my only other option would be to put them outside, but fall is starting here. Right now I'm wondering if I've been scammed as it doesn't appear possible to grow leaves from stems with a single node but no leaves. I just wanted to find out from experienced growers if this is actually possible as I don't have a greenhouse.

Regarding why I purchased them from this vendor, it was a spur of the moment purchase. The thing that caught my eye was that it said that it was a special high yielding variety, the plants looked unusually succulent in the pictures, and that they were offering two cuttings. It did have phyto certificate as I recall. Unfortunately I didn't look up the location of the vendor at the time of purchase. It was only after being surprised at what I was sent that I saw where they were from.
