I haven't been able to access the board until today, and even then it's only from the website, Tapatalk gives me a message that says : Network error, please try again later. (get_config).

Apart an isolated issue 3 days ago for half of the day (with an error I've never seen), it's working great for me.
It tells me it depends on the operating system and update condition each one of us has.

There might now be some issues related to the ransomware attack now going on throughout the world, courtesy of spyware kindly provided by the United States National "Security" Agency and a back door into Windows kindly provided to the NSA by Microsoft.

Those with a Windows computer need to go to Microsoft Update as soon as possible and get the security updates. MS has even released a patch for the Windows XP operating system, for which they had abandoned support.

Yes. Most non-tech users will find it simpler just to launch Windows Update from the Control Panel and let it do the work.

Wikileaks dumps indicate both Microsoft and Apple have installed back doors into their systems. A few people suspect this is for US government spying. I have read allegations in many places that Google spies on everything Android and Google users do. One wonders how much money they could make selling this information to governments.

From now forward users should be especially careful about keeping their security patches up to date. Of course, it seems likely MS, Google and Apple will use these security updates to install even more spyware.

So, I am to understand from you gentlemen: going to updates and downloading them should at least, temporarily keep me running safely. I ask because I have an older machine.

What's the operating system and its version? Go to control panel and then select "System".
In windows edition it says which windows and service packs you have.
Bellow, under system, it says if it's 32 or 64 bits.
