The way I see it for the moment, the only quick cure for this is more mods with the power to delete the spam threads, and maybe even the ability to permanently ban the spammers. For other changes, which will require techy stuff that could take a while, I think a captcha in the registry should stop the automated bots. I think the idea of not being able to post pics or links until you have a certain amount of posts would be GREAT. I know that this is ultimately up to Marty, as he will be the one having to do the changes, but I think that we all should be brainstorming to help Marty out a bit.

I know with all the OB requires of Marty, he can be stretched a bit thin. If there is anything that the rest of us can do, please let us know. Hopefully Marty can divide up some of the responsibilities he's got to some of the other mods/members so we can help. Thanks again for all you do Marty, as well as the rest of the mods

It is aggravating to see spam posts that you can not remove even after banning them , it also locks up the thread ,if you post after the spam crap makes it hard for the mods to find . I am seeing more spammers then legit .members on line lately ..

You don't need to worry about this. If you've given the user an infraction or reported the post then we will get a link straight to the post you have done this from so it's no problem to find. Once we decide someone is a spammer there is a nice easy option to delete all that user's posts in one go, so we don't need to find them.

The only thing I would say is don't comment about the spam and especially don't quote the spam as then those comments/quotes can get missed because we don't see them when we delete the spammer.

There is no problem with just carrying on the thread as though the spam was not there. Just report it to us then carry on the thread as normal.

I thought what it said was not to quote or mention the spam within the thread (because then when the spam is gone it looks confusing or even still has the spam there in the quote).

I will take a look and check out my spam thread and correct it if it's misleading. If you find saying that elsewhere then let me know so I can get it changed.

I can assure you that carrying on with the thread as though the spam has not happened will not cause us any problems. As long as the spam is reported or an infraction given that's all we need.

Just checked and while I'm not sure about other places, this is what my spam thread says.

There is nothing (that I can remember or spot) about not carrying on with the thread.

Unfortunately all that does is bump the thread in the 'New posts' list so more people see it (especially if they are using the 'jump to first unread post' button to view the thread).

Best thing to do is report the post or even better given and infraction to the user so that it emails me and the other moderators to come and clear it up as soon as we can.

Without an infraction or a reported post I will only notice them when I get round to reading that far (if I have time to read that far) rather than getting rid of them as soon as I log in as I do with the reported ones and the ones with infractions. If I don't have much time to read in a day I might never notice the spam

Yes, posting for the sake of it to 'hide' the spam does nothing. It bumps the thread so more people see it rather than the intention of hiding it.

What RJSquirel was doing was just putting a post with under each spam post. While that does not hinder me spotting the spam which has been reported (or infraction given), it also has no useful purpose in hiding the spam.

However I was not saying here that you should not post on-topic for the thread. Just that posting to hide a spam post will not work. Also that if it's not reported/infraction given there is a good chance moderators won't ever spot it.

Once a post is reported, or an infraction given (as you always do Gin ) then further posting on the thread does not hide it from us.

Hope I've made sense there and clarified that a bit.
