It sounds like the loss of lower leaves is pretty normal. They do turn into "trees" with tall trunks as they mature.

Personally, I decide whether to leave keikies alone or not based upon where they are. If they are basal growths, I let 'em be. If they are higher in the plant structure and have lots of their own roots, I'll sometimes opt to separate them. It's totally up to you.
