Harlequin phals usually come in 2 different catalogies, the painted and the Taiwan type. The painted type is more like a smear of color on a background color. Usually, it is a white background but now, I have seen the background as yellow. The Taiwan type is where the background is covered with spots. If you were to disect the flower petals, you would see a double tissue making the flower even thicker than a normal phal flower. It is like the white or yellow phal has actually had red or other colors spots of paint on them. Now, they have become so pronounced with the spots that they cover right over the whole flower. You will know it because the flower will have a white or yellow border with a dark petal. As you can see from my pics of Phal I-Hsin Dalmation, the spots even look raised on the flower. I don't have a pic of the painted ones but they look like that they were spinned out with a colorwheel. You will notice that the spots seem to be random when they appear on the flower, not sure if it is that way or is it just genentics. Hope that helps
