Mary, the only real solid way to determine distance from lights for ANY species of plant is to know how much light the plant depends on. For Phals it could be as low as 750 Foot-candles or so and as high as 2000 foot candles or so (not much higher than that). You'll need a light meter designed for indoor gardening which you might fine at a big box store, but I doubt it. You could get one at a hydroponics store if there's one near by or order from web sources.

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)
