Hi stef. This pic is when I first purchased this over the summer. It's not sphagnum ... not sure what it was but similar to epiweb. Actually, what I did with this one was placed the pot into a larger pot and filled it with the Hydroton. Brassovolas are very fast growing and their roots find their way to the Hydroton quickly. These don't even need potting but if that's the preference, they need to be potted high in the pots, just enough for their roots to get watered. They don't like staying wet. S/H is a totally different approach to growing orchids. I never got good at it and much prefer traditional potting.
