By Phalguy at 2007-06-06 20:21

Media preparation for home orchid flasking.
A step by step guide to replating media preparation.

Part II

Replating Media Preparation

This method is based on Lottes and Thomas asymbiotic germination technique and the homeflasking method I found on the net. I will post an article about sowing seeds from a green pod in a few weeks ! Hope you like it ! This media is used for REPLATING flasking !

For my replating media, I`m using agar, potato flakes as sugar and charcoal.

1. What you need:
- distilled water
- Fertilizer ( I use MSU )
- PH meter or PH paper ( 5.6 )
- Potato flakes
- K-L-N ( any root hormone will do )
- Superthrive ( any vitamin supplement will do )
- Charcoal capsule ( The one you buy in drugstore )
- scale and measuring spoon
- Nitric acid and sodium bicarbonate ( to adjust PH )
- Agar agar

You will also need:

2. Poke a small hole in lids using a nail

3. Clean and washed the jars and sterilize them in the oven at 300 F for 45 minutes.

4. Pour 1 liter of distilled water in sauce pan.
Measure 1 gram of MSU fertilizer

Measure 6 grams of agar

Measure 10 grams of potato flakes

5. Add to water the fertilizer, 0.5 Ml of K-L-N and 0.5 Ml of Superthrive.

6. Take PH and adjust it using sodium bicarbonate or nitric acid .

7. Add flakes, agar and charcoal ( I`m using 1 gram of charcoal for 1 liter of preparation. )

8. Let boil for 2 minutes

9. let jars and preparation cool down for 10 minutes

10. Pour preparation into clean cup

11. Pour preparation in the jars

12. Put lids on cookie sheet with jars for sterilization ( First one for the lids and second one for the jars ) and cover jars with aluminum foil

14. Sterilize in the oven at 300 F for 30 minutes

15. Let cool down a few minutes

16. When cool enough to manipulate, remove foil and screw the lid.
Take a sterile airstrip wound dressing and cover the hole.

Put aside and wait 5 days to make sure they are sterile.
